Our forklift maintenance tips will help keep your truck running smoothly!

Forklifts are no different than other vehicle or machine. They, too, require regular maintenance and a little bit of care for optimal performance. Getting the most out of your forklift is not as difficult as it seems when you adhere to a maintenance schedule. And maintaining your lift means continued productivity for your business.

There are simple steps any forklift owner can take to improve performance. Sticking to a maintenance schedule and promptly addressing any performance-related issues can result in driving efficiency and longevity of your lift truck.

Read these 5 forklift maintenance tips to improve the performance of your lift:

  1. Stick To a 3-Month Oil Change ScheduleThis is one of the simplest practices for optimizing the performance of your forklift. Regular oil changes enhance longevity and lifespan. It is recommended to change the oil every three months to increase fuel efficiency, improve overall performance and prevent combustion problems. Some of the issues that can arise if left untreated are corrosion, failure of the catalytic converter and build-up of engine sludge which hinders performance. In addition to maintaining oil levels, it is also important to change all other required fluids at the same time. And while you’re at it, monitor your hydraulic fluid.
  2. Check the TiresChecking tire pressure can prevent accidents and maximize gas economy. Under-inflated tires can result in poor traction which can cause accidents. On the contrary, overinflated tires can blow out and put your forklift out of service. It’s a good idea to keep a tire gauge handy and check the tires every week. By keeping them at the right pressure, you’ll make the most of your forklift operation. Also, make sure the right set of tires is being used on your lift.
  3. Keep an Eye on the BrakesBad brakes can have disastrous consequences. It is important to address any brake issues as they happen, especially as the brakes get softer and operators have to push harder to engage the brake system. Not changing the forklift brake pads or calipers can result in hazardous or even deadly situations.
  4. Maintain Moving PartsMost moving parts on forklifts need to be greased. By simply keeping these parts greased, you can prevent potentially harmful consequences. If forklift parts lose their lubrication and become more static, it causes friction which causes problems.Check and maintain moving parts frequently and regularly to keep your forklift performing as expected. Also, when needed remove all worn out ball bearings to make sure your lift operates smoothly and efficiently.
  5. Regular Battery MaintenanceTo keep your forklift running smoothly, and to extend its life, it is necessary to keep the battery working efficiently. Batteries have a finite number of cycles if you charge based on convenience instead of sticking to a schedule; you can potentially shorten the battery’s life. The general rule of thumb is to recharge the battery after an eight-hour shift or when it’s discharged more than 30%. Charge the battery until it’s fully charged, and then stop charging.  Having the right amount of water in your battery is important for it to function to its full capacity. Also, keep your forklift battery at a safe temperature. Cleaning the top of the forklift batteries with battery cleaner or warm water is not only a good maintenance practice; it is also required on some batteries to maintain the warranty (read your warranty documentation to be sure).

These forklift maintenance tips will extend the operational life of your lift.

To ensure that a forklift is safe to use, the operator should review a provided checklist before beginning any work.  Maintaining a forklift will increase its lifespan, provide more value and prevent workplace accidents.
