1. Communicate with the workers around you. Warehouses can be a very busy place, so it’s important to communicate with each other. Letting people know what you are doing and where you plan to go can help them to be mindful of your presence.
2. Don’t operate a lift with an unsecured load. You might have more difficulty than usual when securing your load, depending on what it is. but it is important to secure it for the safety of yourself and everyone around you. Take extra care when moving objects that are hard to handle causing them to topple or affect your maneuverability.
3. Park your lift the right way. Safety doesn’t end when you exit your lift. Make sure to park your vehicle in authorized areas only, so that employees know to find stationary forklifts there. Remember to lower the fork to the floor, set the direction controls to neutral, lower the parking brake and turn the ignition off.
4. Get your lift inspected regularly. Forklifts can be dangerous if not properly inspected.  Make sure a qualified inspector reviews your lift for needed servicing. Remind your employer when an inspection is coming due.
5. Know the route you will be taking. When moving through a workplace that has a complex layout or a busy environment, make sure you’re familiar with it to avoid any problems. Be mindful of narrow passages that could hinder your progress. If you’re not sure that your route is safe and clear, wait or move in a safer direction.
6. Be aware of your forklift battery and hydraulic fluid levels. In order to keep your lift running, it’s important to have a properly charged battery and the right hydraulic fluid levels. Not having adequate levels can cause your forklift to stop running, causing a dangerous situation.
